My first awareness of the Nerds
was when they rented the house next to mine
to rehearse in. My old friend became very
excited upon hearing the news, claiming that
they could really get a crowd going like no
other band. "When they play, you just
gotta move,'' he said. He was right. Within
three days I had to move.
Sometime
later, that friend lured me to a Nerds performance,
pointing out the well-known fact that beautiful
women are inexplicably attracted to nerds.
"Remember to bring protection,'' he advised.
Propelled by visions of lust, I went -- discovering
only later that he was referring to ear protection.
Their music still rings in my ears -- literally!!
Time
has passed, and in the capable (if somewhat
demented) hands of Steve Tarkanish, the band
has progressed to Carnegie Hall and now to
several albums, invading even the privacy
of your home.
Pocket
protectors, floods and taped horn-rim glasses
may seem stereotypical, but these guys aren't
even typical in mono. So eat some chicken
soup, drink some Wild Turkey, play the albums
loud, and by all means, catch the Nerds live.
